Following weeks of silence and mounting concerns around Sen. Mitch McConnell’s health, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has officially demanded an update from McConnell.
“Over the last several weeks, Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the current state of your health and wellbeing, and ability to hold office in the United States Senate,” Beshear wrote in a letter Wednesday.
“As Governor, I request that you fully update Kentuckians regarding the current status of your health,” he continued.
Beshear previously told reporters he’s gotten no information from McConnell’s camp since the 84-year-old senator was hospitalized in June.
“If he’s been in the hospital for several weeks, they need to communicate more directly,” Beshear said last week of McConnell’s office. “I don’t even know if he’s been in the hospital for several weeks.”
Beshear’s request comes a day after multiple Republicans said they’ve spoken directly with McConnell in recent days. Each described calls around 20 minutes long, on a variety of topics in the news.
In a statement accompanying his letter, Beshear said, “Allowing speculation to continue in the media is not fair to the Senator or to Kentuckians, and my hope is that this provides him the opportunity to share the information in a transparent manner, direct from the source.”
