Newport residents made it clear: they don’t want their city turned into a testing ground for controversial Flock surveillance technology. The city has been testing 17 Flock license plate readers, which scan vehicles and store data through a private company. Opponents say the cameras could let police track people’s everyday movements, share data beyond Newport, and create privacy risks without enough oversight from the public. Police say the trial was extended to gather more input, but residents packed the room with concerns over privacy, surveillance, and data security.
