Lexington Councilmember Emma Curtis spoke out after McClatchy eliminated most of the Lexington Herald-Leader’s newsroom, removing 13 positions.
The cuts come as McClatchy has been expanding its use of artificial intelligence inside its newsrooms. Earlier this year, the company introduced an AI tool that can take reporters’ original stories and generate new summaries, explainers and video scripts for different audiences.
Journalists at several McClatchy papers have pushed back against the system, including withholding their bylines from AI-reworked stories and filing grievances over its use.
