Kentucky rape survivor explains why she refused to stay silent

Hadley Duvall was 12 when she became pregnant after being raped by her stepfather. She later miscarried.

Years later, she made the deeply personal decision to tell her story publicly as Kentucky debated abortion rights, knowing there could be another girl going through what she did.

Duvall became widely known across Kentucky after starring in an abortion rights-focused campaign ad for Gov. Andy Beshear’s 2023 reelection campaign and has frequently appeared alongside the governor since.

In a conversation with Beshear, Duvall said she kept thinking about what her 12-year-old self needed when deciding whether to hit “post.” No one came to save her, she said, so she decided to become that person for herself and speak for other survivors.

Kentucky’s near-total abortion ban still has no exceptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest.
